You don't get that request often. But she was no prude. Aside from the pasties, everything else was fair game. Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School was founded in 2005 in NYC by artist and illustrator Molly Crabapple. These bawdy life-drawing salons have since become an international phenomenon. She's got a fun book out about it that folks can get their hands on for details and pix on how it all came to be. Local illustrator Glenn Watson and I started a chapter here in Madison in April 2007. It's been great fun so far. Here's an interview we did with thedailypage when we first got started. What I appreciate about Dr. Sketchy's MOST is the community of creative people it's brought together. Making art can be a very solitary activity - Dr. Sketchy's makes it social. It's an opportunity for artists to connect. Dr. Sketchy's allows ME to hone my skills as both a producer and a performer (I'm usually emceeing,) a compelling combo. In addition to getting at the body image stuff that we talk about in your video, we're also being very intentionally sex-positive in our whole approach. Performing burlesque in the way that I do is a form of activism on these fronts. That said, the Dr. Sketchy's gigs are all about having a wild & crazy time - not about overtly pushing some agenda. We laugh A LOT. Did I mention that we hand out cool prizes, too?! Dr. Sketchy's also aims to make drawing something that everyone can enjoy whether or not they have any formal training.
